Momentive Makes A Difference

Momentive Performance Materials Inc. strives to serve as a catalyst for positive change in the communities where our employees work and live.  In fact, being a good corporate citizen is part of our identity.  Our focus is to support organizations that promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) related events.

In addition, TEAM Momentive—the employee-driven, volunteer arm of the company—takes on projects large and small in the community to help improve the lives of local residents.  TEAM Momentive is busy year round supporting local organizations that make a difference in our community.

Throughout 2013, Momentive sponsored and/or participated in the following community-based events and programs:

Cheryl’s Lodge Day of Caring Community Project

About Cheryl’s Lodge

TEAM Momentive has adopted Cheryl’s Lodge for its 2013 Day of Caring community project. Located in Clifton Park, Cheryl’s Lodge is a dedicated resource for 400 families living in the Turf Mobile Home Community. Operated by CAPTAIN Youth and Family Services, the Lodge is a community outreach center that provides educational programs for families, such as: Head Start pre-school, homework assistance, GED classes, reading enrichment and a youth drop-in center. During the summer months, Cheryl’s Lodge operates a Peace Camp teaching children non-violent ways to express themselves. The Lodge also provides breakfast and lunch to income eligible families year-round and is a safe haven for children.

For several weeks during the summer, TEAM Momentive renovated Cheryl’s Lodge. Several teams  re-sided the exterior of the building; landscaped the grounds; replaced swing sets and outdoor tables; painted the entire inside of the building; refurbished the basketball court; replaced overhead lighting units and updated the inside of the community center with new furniture and signage. The transformation has been amazing and we’re all proud of TEAM Momentive.

Champlain Canal clean-up day

The Basics & Operations teams at Momentive sponsored a Champlain Canal clean-up day on May 2, 2013 partnering with the Waterford Canal and Towpath Society.  Over 40 Momentive Associates volunteered throughout the day clearing brush, hauling the brush away, reseeding and landscaping around Locks 4 and 5. Lock #4 is located on the south end of the Towpath just before the Cohoes Bridge.  Lock #5 is located on the Towpath directly south of the Waterford plant.

Momentive Supports Saratoga County Veterans Trust Fund

One of the engineers from the Environmental Health and Safety department who is actively involved in the Saratoga County Chamber’s Veterans Business Council requested support for the Veterans Trust Fund through encouraging participation in the annual 5K run.  The result was outstanding.  Momentive delivered nearly 100 participants at the event raising a considerable amount of funds through the entrance fees.

Momentive is thankful for the opportunity to support its employees and their passions when it comes to helping out in the local community.

Momentive's Six Sigma Team Builds "Hot Box" for local Homeless Shelters

On the evening of November 7, 2013 the Lean Six Sigma team joined up with the Saratoga County chapter of “The Giving Circle” to address an understated concern that has a large impact.  The Giving Circle had secured a grant to build “Hot Boxes” for the local homeless shelters.  These boxes are used to sanitize linens, clothes, and mattresses prior to a new resident moving into a room.  Pests such as bed bugs are common in these types of facilities and the most efficient manner of eradicating them is by placing potentially infected materials in a heated space at 180 degrees F for three hours.  Currently the Giving Circle volunteers have made one for each shelter in Saratoga.

To further help a request had been received to build a “Hot Box” that is portable.  A generous donor offered a trailer and the Lean Six Sigma team built an 8 foot long by 4 foot wide highly insulated “hot box” on the trailer.  The new unit will be available for use at other Shelters, local Motels that extend their vacancies to the displaced and other local people in need.  This will save many dollars in discarded and disposed of clothing, linens, and furniture that prior could not be effectively decontaminated.

Nice work team, another example how Momentive is quietly helping in the communities where we operate.

Mechanicville Area Community Services Center (MACSC)

Elementary students in Mechanicville, NY and the surrounding communities are well prepared for school each September thanks in part to employees from Momentive’s Waterford facility and Albany offices.  Employees donate more than $1,000 worth of back-to-school supplies to the Mechanicville Area Community Services Center’s (MACSC) annual School Supplies Drive to help their neighbors in need.  MASCSC coordinates the collection of school supplies and fills nearly 300 backpacks with all the essentials for a successful start to the school year.

Annual Holiday Toy Drive

Momentive employees adopt more than 100 children from four local elementary schools and adults from two local veteran’s homes to ensure that our neighbors in need enjoy a memorable holiday season.
